Have you ever tasted garden-fresh veggies or fruits? Most people haven’t, but once they’ve had the chance, they’re amazed by their sweet, fresh, and juicy flavors.
And if this is just one of the reasons you want to start a garden, then just know that growing food is not as complicated as you might think. And our small gardening guide for beginners will help you learn how to harvest plants and which foods are the best for gardening at a beginner level. So check them out and let us know what you think!
Tomatoes
Tomatoes need sunlight and support for their stalks, so it would be best if you grew them in hanging baskets or tomato cages. And if you’re a beginner, we recommend that you start with smaller kinds such as cherry tomatoes since they’re very easy to grow.
Salad Leaves
Growing your own fresh and crunchy leaves will definitely be worth your efforts when you use them in your salad. And one of the best parts of salad leaves is that they continue growing after you cut the main leafy part off, which means you can harvest them over and over again! They also grow fast and take up little space, so they’re perfect for growing in a place like your balcony.
Green Beans
Almost all kinds of green beans can be harvested at home. There are many varieties of green beans to choose from, so it can be fun to harvest some of them and wait for them to grow. Green beans don’t need much; just put them under full sunlight and provide well-drained soil.
Onions & Garlic
Onions and garlic are fundamental in your kitchen, and they’re easy to grow. All you need to do is plant them in well-drained soil and leave them be! When their foliage becomes yellow, lift and dry them in the sunshine before consuming.
Radishes
Radishes grow very quickly; just plant them in containers or into the ground during summer and harvest them after 4 weeks. Then you’ll have delicious and colorful radishes for your salads.
Cucumbers
Cucumbers go along with many recipes, especially during the summer. As long as you water them regularly and provide sunlight and support for climbing, you’ll get juicy cucumbers in a short period of time!
Zucchini
Zucchini plants definitely grow in abundance, just like cucumbers and green beans. They grow from seeds and need warm soil and moisture, so it would be best if you planted them in the summer.
Potatoes
Potatoes can be grown in potato bags (partly filled with compost) and are a great crop for so many recipes. After you plant them during February or March, don’t forget to water them regularly. In 10-20 weeks, the foliage becomes yellow and dies back, meaning your potatoes are ready to be harvested!
Spinach
Known for its high amount of iron, spinach is a perfect ingredient for your salads, soups, or omelets. Just make sure you plant as early as you can in the spring!
Spring Onions
You can grow spring onions if you want something new and fresh for your salad but don’t want to wait too long for them to grow. Just let them flower; they’ll self-seed.
Growing food in your home will make you feel better as you’ll feel the pleasure of eating something you grew yourself and enjoy the process of your plants growing every day. So give these a try and let us know what you think!
