So lately, homesteading has caught my attention and I’ve been getting interested in the idea. I mean, we’re full-time travelers right now, so it’s definitely a future project. But the thought that you can raise a few animals (like chickens), grow your own veggies, and so much more. It definitely sounds like a fun and great way to save money.
And If you’re thinking about getting started on homesteading, then I’ve gathered some tips and hacks that’ll definitely help you out. These are ideas that are easy to implement, will save you so much time and money, and make your life simpler.
So check them out, roll up those sleeves, get to work, and let me know what you think!
DIY Chicken Water and Food Feeder
Do yourself a little favor and try out this DIY project that’ll benefit your hens. Using a ground feeder, an empty gallon bucket, and a plastic top that fits on it, you can easily make this chicken water and food feeder. Just be sure that if you do use a bucket that’s been hanging around, it’s cleaned properly to avoid chicken contamination.
Grow Fruit Trees in Container
If you have limited space at home, you can still grow fruit trees and have them accessible at all times. Fruit like lemons, calamondin, and dwarf kaffa lime trees can grow in containers for a few years and you can transplant them to the ground later on.
Use Mason Jars For Bee Keeping
Honey makes a great healthy sweetener that can used for drinks or baking.
And that might be why it seems like everyone is interested in making their own beehive in a jar. With a little bit of studying and planning, you can make honey even if you’re living in the suburbs. It’s actually very simple and an easy process with the right tools.
Improve The Quality Of Your Soil
Having safe and healthy soil for crops is a must. I highly suggest using an organic method to improve your soil quality. Use your kitchen waste which includes fruit and vegetable peels, to serve as a natural soil fertilizer. You’re saving your waste and saving your crops as well.
Start Seeds in an Egg Carton
Instead of buying more plastic seed-starter pots or an expensive kit, try using some free materials you’d otherwise be throwing out. Egg cartons work great in germinating your seeds and save you money.
Use Duct Tape To Kill Bugs
Who likes bugs right? They eat your plant and kill them off. Luckily though, you can easily get rid of them with just the use of duct tape. Just put the tape on the leaves and then peel them off. You’ll be surprised with how many you can get rid of in a moment.
Freeze Root Vegetables
Root vegetables generally freeze well, whether peeled or unpeeled. They can last up to nine months when stored in your freezer and fourteen months in a vacuum-packed freezer bag. So the next time you harvest a generous amount of vegetables, freeze them up and save money.
You can easily get a vacuum zipper bags here!
Make Your Eggs Last Longer
In case your chickens lay a lot of eggs, freeze them in a muffin tin or ice tray to prevent them from going bad. Sunny-side up, scrambled, poached egg, name it you can have it every day.
Now, If you’re thinking about the best time to start your homesteading, let me tell you one thing: the best time to start working towards your goals is always NOW. And implementing these tips and tricks will definitely make your life a bit easier. So give them a try and let me know what you think.
