In the noisy world of advertising, there are only a few hair products that stand out for quality. It can be hard to find the right brand that serves your hair type while many promise much but deliver little.
American Crew hair products have risen above many others due to their quality and variety for men’s different hair types.
What goes into them is high quality as well. And while that may not be your main focus, it’s still something to think about if you want to protect your hair from damage or loss.
Because American Crew has so many different hair products for men’s hairstyling, it can be hard singling out the best American crew product.
For those wondering what hair product they should use, here are 3 core products that’ll get you started on what they have to offer.

1. Best American Crew Hair Products:
Forming Cream
Hair Type:
Forming Cream is one of the best American Crew products for thin hair, but it actually works well for all other hair types too.
So whether your hair is thick, fine, curly, or wavy, Forming Cream will help you manage your hair throughout the day.
Hold and Shine:
The main description that American Crew gives is that it has a medium hold and medium shine, however many men have stated that the hold lasts all day and there’s little to no shine when applied correctly (in small amounts.)
With this said, Forming Cream is great in that it helps you keep a great hairstyle without having to work too much in. And with little to work in, your hair has a softer, less product appearance when going out.
How to Apply:
A bit firm, Forming Cream is easily workable when ran through your fingers a few times and applied to hair.
It can be worked into dry or damp hair, depending on your hair type and whatever style you’re aiming for.
Make sure not to use it too much, a little goes a long way. If too much is applied, it will make your hair clumped and will feel greasy. Apply small amounts until you feel you have created your desired look.
What It’s Made With:
With Lanolin and Carnauba (Brazil/palm) wax, conditioning sucrose, and mineral oil, this American Crew Forming Cream has quality not just in the look it gives you, but what they put in it as well.
Pros:
👍 A great masculine scent ideal for business meetings or dates
👍 Moisturizes and conditions hair
👍 Easily comes out with shampoo
👍 Excellent for thin hair and good for medium thickness hair too
Cons:
(Yes, even the best American crew products have a few cons!)
👎 Would struggle to hold back thick, wavy and medium to long length hair
👎 If used for the hair types listed above, you’d probably use up the product within 3-4 weeks since it comes in a 3 oz pot
Fiber

Hair Type:
If you have untameable hair that’s hard to style or you want a stronghold that you’re confident will last for hours, then Fiber is the way to go.
Hold and Shine:
Fiber has a matte finish which means you’ll have a more natural look with no product shine.
And as mentioned before, it has a stronghold that can last you through the entire workday or at night with friends.
How to Apply:
First, you want to make sure you use small amounts until you get the desired look.
It’s a strong waxy substance, so once it’s on your hand, work it into your palm so it will become more pliable and smooth.
Then work it into dry or damp hair until it’s formed the way you like. (The hold is weakened substantially if applied to wet hair and will also make the hair look shinier.)
Note that the dryness of the product is what gives you a gravity-defying look, unlike Pomade which is heavier and damp.
Lastly, make sure you don’t run your fingers through your hair. Fiber’s stronghold keeps the hair together which could cause you to rip some hair out if you’re not careful.
What It’s Made With:
Made with Lanolin and beeswax, and moisturizing oils and fats, Fiber gives you a great hold while treating your hair.
Pros:
👍 A great scent
👍 One of the best men’s hair products for thick hair since it holds hair so well without leaving it shiny or “crunchy”
👍 Gives hair a fuller and thicker look while keeping it moisturized
👍 Easily comes out with shampoo
Cons:
👎 You’ll need to make sure to completely rub it into your hands before applying
👎 Will leave your hands feeling sticky and needing to be washed
Pomade

Hair Type:
While it’s especially suited for curly hair, Pomade can work well with all hair types.
Hold and Shine:
With a medium hold, Pomade also has a higher shine than the last two. And depending on how much you use, you can either have a light sheen or high gloss.
Just make sure to keep in mind that it is pliable, so if you run your fingers through your hair, it will come out of place.
How to Apply:
Unlike Forming Cream and Fiber, Pomade is more like an actual cream; no working through hands to loosen firmness.
Just rub evenly through hands so as to give your hair (whether damp or dry) a smooth and even application to help tame flyaways and keep your hairstyle in place.
Just remember to add a little at a time so that you don’t get a large buildup of hair product and so that your hair doesn’t look too greasy or heavy.
What It’s Made With:
This product is made with ginseng and coconut oil (you can’t smell the coconut, for those of you who aren’t crazy about coconut scent) to give great health and moisturize to your hair.
Pomade also features Quillaja Saponaria bark extract which has many great benefits for your hair and scalp’s health.
Pros:
👍 Another great scent
👍 Keeps hair moisturized and nourished to help prevent hair loss and damage
👍 Easily comes out with shampoo
Cons:
👎 Hold is generally better for shorter hair than longer hair
👎 However, great for swept-back longer hairstyles since the longer hair will help keep the hold naturally
👎 May dry out in high temperatures
2. Which American Crew Product Should I Use?
As you can see from these 3 different hair products, there is some overlap in what they offer and many people could use more than one product to good effect.
But despite these products being pretty versatile for all hair types, here is a helpful little table to help you work out which is the best American crew product to try for yourself first.
Hair Type | Hair Length | What American Crew Product Is Right for Me |
---|---|---|
Curly | Any* | Pomade |
Thick & Wavy | Short / Medium | Fiber |
Any | Any** | Forming Cream |
*But short to medium hair length is more typical.
**But you’ll have to use more product for longer hair lengths that are 5 inches or over.
3. American Crew Product Comparison
If you’re torn between products, here is a bit more info about each product and how they compare to one another.
Forming Cream Vs Pomade
- Pomade has a stronger hold and shine than Forming Cream.
- Despite being capable of all hair types, Pomade is best for people with curly hair whereas Forming Cream is more versatile.
- Creams can be most beneficial for people with thinner hair (to texture it), whereas Pomade is most beneficial for people with thicker hair.
Forming Cream Vs Fiber
- Fiber has a stronger hold but less shine than Forming Cream.
- Fiber specializes in people with thick & wavy hair, whereas Forming Cream is the jack of all trades.
- Fiber isn’t as good at handling long hair as the versatile Forming Cream which can even be used as a men’s long hair product.
Pomade Vs Fiber
- Pomade has a slightly stronger hold and much more shine than Fiber.
- Pomade is better for curly hair, Fiber is better for thick & wavy hair.
- But either could be considered the best American Crew product for thick hair.

4. FAQs About American Crew Products
Is American Crew Vegan?
No.
Is American Crew Good for Your Hair?
Generally yes.
Out of these 3 hair products, the Pomade and the Forming Cream are the best for your hair’s health since they nourish and moisturize.
So Is American Crew Fiber Bad for Your Hair?
No, not really.
This idea has mostly come because a few people have reported hair loss while using American Crew Fiber, but this is mostly because it is tough and running your fingers through it may cause you to pull some hair out if you tug too hard.
If you’re suffering from hair loss naturally, using American Crew Fiber might not be the best product for you long-term, but you shouldn’t worry about using it generally.
Is American Crew a Good Brand?
While brands are a matter of personal preference and many other great competing brands have arisen in recent years, the good thing about American Crew is that it has stood the test of time.
Not only that, but it was also one of the first companies to bring men’s hair products to the forefront in America, so you can trust they know what they’re doing since they were the first people doing it.
American Crew is a great go-to when looking for a good price as well as quality.
There are many other products to choose from when exploring the All American Crew’s line, but these 3 are great to first experiment with and see which one fits your hair type and hairstyle best.
