1. Create Spaces by the Window
If you want a good piece of advice for decorating your home for free, then creating a window space is a great way to do it.
You can take furniture and decor pieces from the different areas of your home to create a relaxing (and maybe cozy) space by your window.
It gives your home a bit of warmth and can honestly look pretty great.
Here Are Some Items You Can Use:
- Candles
- A cozy blanket
- A nice chair or two
- A small table or side table
- A small bookshelf
- Small coffee table
- A vase with some flowers
And anything else that you think would work.
2. Gather Pieces for Arrangements (Vignette)
Take different decor pieces that you find in that same room or other places in the home to create a pretty vignette.
And this could be something you put on your coffee table, side table, or any place you think it’d look great.
So if you have a pretty mirror, art, vases, books, candles, trays, accent lighting, a house plant, or anything else that you think would work well together, then this is a great way to decorate your home for free.
3. Join Online Groups
Whether it’s a Facebook group of people (in your area) getting rid of things they no longer want, or a Buy Nothing Group, there are ways you can get home decor items for free.
It’s such a simple way to ask for specific items you’d want, browse items already listed, and even get rid of the things you don’t want as well.
4. Rearrange Furniture in Two Ways
Telling you to rearrange your furniture as a way to decorate your home for free is pretty obvious, but also necessary.
And if you’re going to do it, then here are a couple of things to consider.
Perspective: Sit in different areas of the room to get a new perspective and a feel for where you’d like the future to be placed. What looks best to you? Do you want the seating to be facing natural light? Would you like to have the furniture not be focused around the TV? Do you want things to be a bit more open or cozy and intimate? These are honestly some great questions to ask yourself as you do this.
Creating Spaces: If you’d like to do something new, then also think about creating different spaces in the same room. So maybe you want to take some furniture pieces and place them around the TV, and others to be placed in a way that’s better for conversation.
5. Decorate With Matchbooks
If you’re someone who likes to collect cute matchbooks from hotels or restaurants, then you should probably watch this quick Tiktok video.
And even if you haven’t, then it’s something you can do over time and have a cute decor piece.
Essentially, you’re taking pretty matchbooks and putting them into a large bowl, trinket dish, or a tray. That’s it. It’s so simple and gives your room a bit more character!
5. Steal from Other Rooms & Storage
First, think about what look you’re actually trying to go for, and then go into other rooms to find items that would work.
So these could be lamps, throws, pillows, candles, vases, books, and anything else that might work.
Also, try looking through your storage boxes to see what you can find.
Sometimes, there are items you forgot existed!
6. Gather Some Branches & Flowers
Taking some flowers and branches from your own yard is always going to be a great way to quickly decorate your home for free.
Side Note: Branches if cut and displayed right really do look amazing!
You can display these on your kitchen counter or table, a side table in the hallway, in your living room, or anywhere else you’d like to add some color and texture.
7. Declutter Items That No Longer Serve You (or Your Decor)
Sometimes there are items in a room that are really taking away from the aesthetic.
And these could be things like decor pieces you no longer like or items that should be put in other rooms (or given away).
So gather up these pieces that clutter up your space and see where else they could go if you’re not going to get rid of them.
It’s such an easy way to open up a space and make it feel more relaxed.
8. Take from Your Wardrobe
This idea is a bit new to me, but I really like it!
Take pieces from your wardrobe to decorate your space. These could be clothing items or accessories.
So for instance, you could hang your hats up on the wall, put your jewelry on a tray, or hang up a pretty dress right outside your wardrobe.
It’s such a simple way to decorate your home.
9. Change Up Your Lighting
A great way to quickly decorate your home without spending any money is to change up the lighting.
Think about the spaces you’ve now created and what kind of mood you want them to have.
Sometimes it can be nice to have a bright well-lit space, but other times, it feels so much better to have warm indirect lighting.
So if there’s a nice lamp or other light fixtures you could take from rooms where they’re not needed, then I’d say go for it!
I honestly think finding ways to decorate the home for free is kind of fun.
It’s a very simple way to get creative and have an almost new look same day.
You kind of get this instant gratification instead of going to the store and not getting anything because there was nothing that actually worked for you.
So try a few of these ideas and see how much your spaces change!
